“The Book of Dede Korkut, also spelled as Dada Gorgud, Dede Qorqut or
Korkut-ata (Turkmen: Gorkut-ata), is the most famous epic story of the
Oghuz Turks (also known as Turkmens or Turcomans). The book's mythic
narrative is part of the cultural heritage of Turkic states some of which
are Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, as well as to a lesser degree
Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Dede Korkut Stories were collected from Eastern Anatolian and Azerbaijan
folklore in the 16th century; however, the creation of these stories dates
back to oral literature.

The Book Dede Korkut is a compilation of tales about the Turkic peoples of
Central Asia, heroic tales of steppe conquest, a represedentative of oral
Traditions in Turkic Epics, the validity of marriage customs are mentioned
in Dede Korkut Stories, one of the most substantial works enlightening the
past periods.

At the beginning of the middle ages, Turks had nomadic civilizations so
that history writing, science and agriculture had not been developed yet.
Dede Korkut lived at these centuries, therefore, his stories were not
written at first. He told verbally and listeners told his stories among
Turks. However, after conquests Turks partly became settled civilizations.
Hence, with the development of history writing, science and literature,
they wrote Dede Korkut’s verbal stories.”

“One of the most famous collections of Turkish stories is that compiled in
the name of Dede Korkut -- a wise man (possibly fictional) who lived in
the time of the Oğuz Turks. This was a tribe of nomadic Turkmen who began
to embrace Islam and live a less nomadic life than their forefathers in
the 13th century.

European fairy tales tell of princes and princesses, of castles and
dragons, of knights and witches and stories that end happily ever after.

Dede Korkut's tales also star princes and princesses. In place of castles
are gold-topped tents. Lords and nobles replace the knights, but their
worth is still measured by the swiftness of their trusted steeds, their
bravery in battle and the accuracy of their arrow shot. The infidels
replace witches and dragons as the enemies of our heroes. Often the aim of
the protagonists is to restore their honor; other times the stories have a
pure "boy wins girl" plot line.

We learn about life on the nomadic plains of Central Asia.”
