THE OHRID CONFERENCE 1997

Between the 19th and 22nd of September 1997, the delegations of twenty European P.E.N. Centres which usually make up the Committee of Translation and Linguistic Rights met in Ohrid (Macedonia) in order to elaborate a work plan which will promote cultural dialogue between different European literatures by means of interchanging translations.

Among the members who attended were the then Chair, writer Isidor Consul, and representatives of the German, Albanian, Austrian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Slovenian, Israeli, Montenegrin, Polish, Serbian, Romanian, Russian, Turkish and Czech Republic P.E.N. Centres, besides the Catalan P.E.N. Centre and the Macedonian P.E.N. Centre who hosted the meeting.

This special meeting made it possible to launch a new branch of the Committee dedicated to translations. Among the achievements of the Committee in this field have been the production of various collections of cross-translations: a Catalan/Slovene anthology, a Catalan/Finnish/Flemish anthology, a Swedish/Portuguese anthology, a Danish/Catalan anthology, a Flemish/Catalan anthology, a Cypriot/Hungarian anthology, and a Hungarian/Flemish anthology, Macedonian/Bulgarian, Macedonian/Catalan, Macedonian/Serbian anthologies, as well as anthologies of modern Swedish, Austrian and Swiss literature translated into English.
